Tinyglot is built so that your learning stays yours. There is no Tinyglot account, no analytics and no advertising. This page lists everything the app keeps and everything it sends.
What stays on your Mac
Your saved words, reviews, bookmarks, notes, lesson history, Glee conversations, focus sessions and settings are stored on your Mac, inside Tinyglot’s own sandboxed folder. So are the transcripts Tinyglot makes of your videos: macOS’s own speech recognition writes them, and the sound never leaves your Mac. Videos and folders you add are read where they are; Tinyglot never copies, moves or changes them. Backups you export are files you choose where to keep.
What Tinyglot sends, and to whom
- YouTube. YouTube lessons play in YouTube’s own page, which loads the video and its captions from YouTube and keeps YouTube’s cookies inside Tinyglot, as a browser would. Your library shows video thumbnails from YouTube. Google’s privacy policy applies to what YouTube receives.
- OpenAI, only if you connect ChatGPT. When you explain or save a word, Tinyglot sends the text you selected, its line, the video’s title and your language settings. When you ask Glee, it also sends the lesson’s transcript (for a long lesson, the parts Glee needs, which can be all of it), your recent messages in that conversation and the words you saved from that video. All of this goes to OpenAI under your own ChatGPT account, and nothing is sent until you ask. Signing in, and staying signed in, also talks to OpenAI.
- jsDelivr, for stroke order. When you open stroke order, Tinyglot downloads the stroke data for those characters from the jsDelivr network, which hosts the open Hanzi Writer data. Like any website, jsDelivr sees the request, but nothing else about you or your learning.
- Apple, for speech models. The first time you transcribe a video in a language, macOS downloads that language’s speech recognition model from Apple. Your video and its sound are not sent.
- Polar, for your license. Activating a license key sends the key and your Mac’s name to Polar, our payment provider, so you can see and manage your activations. The key is checked again about once a week.
- Tinyglot, for updates. Once a day, and whenever you choose Check for Updates, Tinyglot asks tinyglot.com whether a newer version exists. The request carries only the app’s version; like any website, tinyglot.com sees the request, but nothing about you or your learning. You can turn the daily check off in Settings ▸ License.
Credentials
Your ChatGPT sign-in and your license are kept in your Mac’s Keychain. They are never included in backups, never written to logs and never sent anywhere except to the service they belong to.
Buying Tinyglot
Purchases are handled by Polar, which acts as the seller and processes your payment. Polar’s privacy policy covers the details you give at checkout. We receive your email address and order, to send your license key and to help you if something goes wrong.
